Practical guide

Use Timbre’s source-cited research through MCP

MCP lets a compatible assistant call Timbre’s research tools while you work. Instead of copying passages between applications, you can search a person’s compiled recordings, open the source timestamps, and ask a cited question through your Timbre account. MCP access is included on Studio and Roster; the free Listener plan is for the Timbre web app.

Connect with your Timbre account

Sign in to Timbre and open Settings for the current connection instructions. Add the Timbre server address to an assistant that supports remote MCP over HTTP with OAuth. The assistant should open Timbre’s sign-in and consent flow so you can review the requested access before approving it.

You use the Timbre address and your own account authorization. Do not paste your password or a private session token into a prompt. The location of an MCP connection setting varies by assistant and plan; the supported-client instructions in Timbre Settings are the starting point.

What the tools do

The list_subjects tool lists compiled profiles and their available material. The search tool finds matching transcript passages for a selected person and returns timestamps and source links. The principles tool returns extracted reasoning patterns and their evidence. The ask tool produces a generated answer using a selected person’s public record.

Search and ask serve different purposes. Search helps locate evidence; ask interprets evidence in response to a question. An interpretation can still miss context. Open the original recording before relying on an attribution.

Start with an evidence-first request

For example: Find relevant passages in the Brian Chesky collection about learning from early customers. Show the speaker and timestamp, then distinguish what the recordings say from your application to my situation. This is a suggested research prompt, not an example of a result already produced.

If a profile or topic is not covered, the assistant should make that limit clear. A connected tool does not create evidence that is absent from the public record.

Review and manage the connection

Timbre Settings shows your connected clients and provides controls to revoke a connection. Your assistant may need to reconnect if access is revoked or permissions change. Tool calls remain subject to Timbre’s plan access and rate limits; adding the connection does not bypass them.
